Forstschule Latemar

Forstschule Latemar

Nestled in the alpine meadows of Welschnofen, South Tyrol, the Forstschule Latemar (2006) by Arch. Stefan Gamper redefines educational infrastructure through a seamless integration of timber construction and passive climate design. As a Klimahaus Standard B facility, this public building for forestry education prioritizes sustainability, embodying the region’s commitment to low-energy architecture. The project extends two existing small wooden structures into a cohesive ensemble, forming a linear, rectangular volume that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.

The school’s elongated form follows the natural contours of the site, its expansive glazed façade offering unobstructed views of the Latemar mountain range while maximizing daylight penetration. A pitched roof shelters the interior, while the material palette—predominantly locally sourced larch wood—echoes the region’s traditional alpine craftsmanship. Circulation is intuitive, with open-plan learning spaces arranged along a central axis, fostering collaboration and connectivity between students and instructors.

Structurally, the design minimizes environmental impact through passive heating and cooling strategies, aligning with Klimahaus Standard B’s energy efficiency benchmarks. The absence of non-renewable systems underscores the project’s reliance on natural ventilation and solar gain, a testament to Gamper’s ability to merge contemporary architecture with ecological responsibility. As a landmark in sustainable alpine education, Forstschule Latemar stands as a model for public buildings in South Tyrol’s high-altitude landscapes.
