Karerhof

Karerhof
Nestled within the rolling meadows and forests of Welschnofen, South Tyrol, the Karerhof completes its transformation in 2024 under the guidance of StudioPavol Mikolajcak Architects, with Arch. Matthias Holzmann leading the design. This sensitive renovation of an agricultural and hospitality complex achieves Klimahaus Standard B, a rigorous certification for energy-efficient alpine buildings. Positioned to frame views of the Latemar and Rosengarten massifs, the project balances rural functionality with contemporary hospitality, serving as both a working farm and a destination for tourism and gastronomy.
The intervention takes the form of a restrained, linear extension that mirrors the existing farm’s organic rhythm while asserting its own quiet presence. A sloping roof and carefully modulated volumes follow the site’s topography, ensuring minimal visual disruption to the surrounding landscape. Circulation is intuitive, guiding visitors through a sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces that emphasize connection to the land—whether through expansive glazing, timber-clad interiors, or terraced outdoor areas. The design avoids ornamental gestures, instead relying on the honesty of materials and structural logic to define its identity.
Locally sourced larch wood and stone dominate the material palette, their natural tones and textures reinforcing the project’s integration into the alpine environment. Passive strategies—such as optimized orientation, high-performance insulation, and natural ventilation—underpin the Klimahaus B certification, while large windows harness daylight to reduce energy demand. The result is a building that feels both timeless and precisely attuned to its context, where architecture and agriculture coexist in harmony.
