Hofmannanger

Bozen’s Sarntal Valley is defined by its agricultural roots, where traditional farmsteads shape the rural identity of this South Tyrolean landscape. Completed in 2017, Hofmannanger—designed by Studionull17 Architektur with lead architects Philipp Steger, Heinrich Mutschlechner, and Michael Baumgartner—embodies this ethos through a single-family residence built to Klimahaus Standard A energy efficiency. The project rejects imposed modernism, instead embedding itself into the valley’s organic topography as a quiet extension of its agricultural heritage.

The compact, low-slung form emerges seamlessly from the terrain, avoiding artificial interventions like retaining walls, parking areas, or terraces. A single field path leads to the building, which appears as if carved from the land itself—its volume no more disruptive than a barn or hay shed. The design preserves the existing slope, with no forced alterations to the valley’s natural rhythm. Inside, spatial circulation follows a rural logic: functional zones flow without overt hierarchy, while large windows frame views of the surrounding meadows and forests, reinforcing the home’s role as both shelter and extension of the landscape.

Materiality grounds the project in its place. Rough-sawn larch cladding and exposed concrete cast against timber formwork create a tactile contrast, while all wood—including the structural beams—sources from the client’s own forest. The timber was felled, milled, and installed untreated, adhering to traditional lunar cycles and local craftsmanship. Sustainability extends beyond passive design: the building’s minimal footprint and reliance on regional materials align with Sarntal’s agrarian values, proving that contemporary architecture in the Alps can honor tradition without imitation.
