Day Guide
Meran, to me, feels like a sleepy giant standing quietly among a forest of destinations. A place you can’t miss, yet might dismiss at first glance. I’ve lived here for 26 years—and only recently started discovering parts of the city I once overlooked as a teenager or rushed past as a child.
Nestled between alpine peaks and Mediterranean gardens, Meran (Merano in Italian) blends historic elegance with a vibrant café and arts culture. Scenic promenades, modern architecture, and remnants of old-world glamour come together effortlessly—making even a single day here feel rich and unhurried.
When to visit: Enjoy Meran best on sunny or partly cloudy days when the surrounding mountains shine in full glory.
Languages: 50% German, 50% Italian—but 100% relaxation. Best Days: Friday and Saturday, when the town feels most alive.
Time Needed: A full day to soak in the best spots.
Meran rose to prominence as a spa town during the Austro-Hungarian era, and traces of that history remain visible today. Grand hotels, wide promenades, and districts like Obermais or the Tappeinerweg still carry the elegance of that time—both easily worth a full day on their own. But let’s focus on how to spend a perfect day in Meran.
I usually begin in Obermais (Maia Alta), the district where I grew up. It’s one of the calmer parts of the city, ideal for a slow start. Small cafés and local bakeries set the tone—simple, relaxed, unpretentious. Most visitors arrive by train and enter Meran through the station area, which feels more functional than atmospheric. My advice: head straight to Obermais and begin there.
The heart of the district is Brunnenplatz. It’s a natural meeting point and a great place for your first coffee. Bar Maia is a local favorite, while the more historic Brunnenplatz Café—despite looking like a restaurant—serves a proper Italian breakfast. Here, breakfast means exactly two things: coffee and a cornetto. Nothing more, nothing less. If you need something extra, wander down the street to the small fruit market or a nearby bakery. Just next door, you’ll find the Monocle Store—beautifully curated, thoughtfully designed, and run by an exceptionally friendly owner.
Once well fed and caffeinated, you can either head down into the city or keep exploring Obermais. Architecture lovers should take their time here: stately villas, mature trees, and subtle details reveal themselves slowly. The San Giorgio Church is worth a short stop, as are the historic mansions lining the streets. From here, you can descend toward the city center through Sissi Park, where Empress Elisabeth once strolled, or head for an early walk along the Tappeinerweg, one of Meran’s most scenic panoramas.
In the city itself, experiences change with the seasons. In winter, the Therme Meran and the Christmas market are essential stops. In summer, the Gran Premio Merano offers a glimpse into the town’s sporting tradition with its historic horse race. Start at the Cathedral, walk through the Lauben, grab a coffee at Kuntino’s, and stop by Siebenförcher for speck and cheese sourced from local farmers. Pur Südtirol complements this perfectly with a curated selection of regional products, while Signorvino is ideal for wine lovers exploring South Tyrol and beyond.
For dinner, Meran quietly offers some of the best restaurants in the region. My personal favorite is Kallmünz, a place where food, atmosphere, and history come together beautifully. If you’re looking for something more casual, Römerkeller in the Lauben is a solid choice. I’d skip Forstbräu in town and, if time allows, visit the brewery in Algund instead—though the city location works fine for a quick beer and meal.
If you’re staying longer, Meran rewards a slower pace. Visit one of its museums, stroll along the Passer, or simply sit somewhere shaded during the warmer months—summer heat can be intense, and a quick dip in the river can feel surprisingly refreshing. Meran isn’t a place to rush. It’s a city best discovered gradually, one detail at a time.
